James C. Zampell, President & CEO, Receives the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Harbison Walker International Contractor/Installer Seminar

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – APRIL 21, 2016 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – James C. Zampell, President & CEO, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Harbison Walker International at their annual Contractor/Installer Seminar held in Duck Key, Florida.  The inscription on the award reads: “For a lifetime of dedicated leadership, service and inspiration to the refractory industry.” Many of the Zampell management team members were in attendance, along with his wife, Christine, and his son, Brian, who also serves as Zampell’s Vice President and COO.

The Harbison Walker International Contractor/Installer Seminar is an annual event that captures a majority of refractory contractors and installers from the USA who are affiliated with Harbison Walker.  It serves as a major event for the industry in the USA and as a forum for recognizing contributions to the industry.  The Lifetime Achievement Award is given on special occasions to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the refractory industry in the USA.  Another significant award at this event is the Harbison Walker International Legends Award, which is awarded posthumously.  The inscription on the Legends Award reads: “Celebrating a career of legendary accomplishment in the refractories industry and honoring a legacy of inspiration for generations to follow.” This award was previously awarded to Thomas J. Zampell (1916 – 2004), Jim’s father and Zampell’s founder, and Raymond F. Flynn (1957 – 2010), Zampell’s former Vice President of Engineering.

Pete Antimarino of Harbison Walker International wrote in his official notice for the award, “Jim distinguished himself from other worthy candidates through not only the decades of outstanding leadership that he has provided in building a world-class refractory contracting company, and providing a strong, positive, and guiding influence over the Zampell/HWI partnership, but also through the positive impact Jim has had on the entire refractory industry.  It’s often been said that we work in a rough and tumble, down and dirty business, so Jim’s commitment to integrity, quality, safety, and maybe most importantly, building into the lives of others, is greatly appreciated and admired by all who know him.”

In reflection on the great achievement, Jim Zampell said, “Let’s be clear that this award is not just about me.  It is also about the people that I have been lucky enough to have work with me over the years.” Jim went on to mention his appreciation for several of the Zampell employees who came to support his achievement, his wife Christine and  his family, the representatives of Harbison Walker International, and he also mentioned his father, Tom Zampell, and Ray Flynn, who previously had won the Legends Award from Harbison Walker International.  He closed by saying, “Without all of these people, I am not standing here and Zampell wouldn’t be the company it is today.”

Brian Zampell also participated in the award ceremony, and remarked, “My father is a very modest but strong leader for our company.  He is magnanimous in that he always gives credit to everyone but himself, especially the employees, for his great achievements over the past forty years of his career, thirty five of which he has served as President and CEO.  This time, it’s great to see him be recognized for his leadership, integrity, and persistence that has carried the Zampell Companies across the USA, into Europe, and into another generation of existence.  Tonight, it’s all about my father, and well deserved.  On behalf of all the employees of Zampell, congratulations, thank you, and job well done!”
