Zampell Completes Refractory Installation at Louisiana Pellet Mill

BEAUMONT, TX, USA – MARCH 24, 2015 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – Despite the monsoons of August in Louisiana, Zampell persevered and completed a major new construction project at a new pellet production facility in Louisiana. Pellets are a key source of biomass energy in the European marketplace as there is a unified goal to minimize fossil fuel usage. By using pellets instead of fossil fuels, European power producers are able to still utilize major assets by doing conversion projects from something like coal to wood pellets. This sort of forward thinking is moving each European country closer and closer to every nation’s end goal – energy independence.

This particular project for Zampell will be one of the largest producers in the USA. As a PelletMill2credit to Zampell, the company had zero OSHA recordable injuries and zero OSHA lost time injuries on this project. With everything that Zampell does, the most important measurement is that the jobs are done safely. On top of that, Zampell installed eight hundred and fifteen tons of refractories on this project as well, making it one of the bigger projects that Zampell has ever tackled.

The crew was pleased to finish the job as well due to the challenges from weather. When asked about the site conditions, the project manager said with a chuckle, “Mud, mud, and more mud.” For one particular stretch, the crew reflected that it must have rained for two months straight. Again, despite these challenges, Zampell persevered and got the job done.

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – AUGUST 25, 2014 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – In July 2014, a cooperation agreement was signed with the J+G Group focusing on the North American waste incineration market. Just like Zampell, J+G is a medium sized, family-run business located in Schwetzingen, Germany. They share common values and philosophy by having a dedication to engineering and product development for the benefit of the client. Just like Zampell in North America, J+G has a high market share in the European waste incineration sector.

The objective of the cooperation is to mutually introduce, establish and market the JuSyS tile systems and technology in North America. J+G offers unique solutions and information that can give a new perspective to Zampell and its clients on refractory maintenance and repairs. Zampell’s COO, Brian J. Zampell, and J+G’s CEO, Markus Horn, also see further opportunities for cooperation in other business sectors.

When asked about the agreement, Brian Zampell commented that, “At Zampell, we are consistently looking for new ideas that can improve our service to our customers. The Zampell Brokks are Here!

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – JUNE 19, 2014 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – The Zampell Brokks are Here!  Zampell acquired a Brokk 150 and a Brokk 180 to expand its demolition capabilities in the US marketplace.

These two machines are currently based out of the Maine office and will augment Zampell’s capabilities to service its kiln clients in the pulp and paper and cement industries.  By having these two machines at its disposal, it increases Zampell’s abilities to respond to emergencies with larger scopes and give Zampell the capabilities to provide full turnkey services with its own equipment.

A great additional benefit of these machines is that they are already proving to be useful in other areas.  There are other positive applications in aluminum furnaces, general construction, and specialty indoor demolition.  Since these machines run on electricity, there are no fumes that can provide a greater hazard to personnel during demolition.  Their robotic arms also provide excellent dexterity without sacrificing impact force.

The most important benefit of these two machines, is that they will continue to improve Zampell’s overall safety.  As more and more applications are found, they will help prevent injuries due to falling demolition debris and repetitive impact from manual demolition.  By making sure that all employees are able to return home in the same condition that they came to work, Zampell can fulfill its ultimate mission as a family business: taking care of its people.

Hjørring Heating Facility is Complete

HJØRRING, DENMARK – MARCH 6, 2014 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – Zampell subsidiary, Schmidt & Danielsen A/S recently completed the refractory construction on a new biomass power plant in Hjørring, Denmark.  This facility will supply roughly 40% of the heating capacity for the area now that it is complete.  Prior to going into full service, the refractory lining will be dried of any water content and fired to attain a ceramic bond that can withstand the heat from operation.

This new facility specializes in the combustion of a variety of biomass fuels, including straw, wood ships, willow, oat husks, coffee grounds, and potentially any other natural energy sources.  The design of the facility also maintains a high temperature of combustion that can allow it to burn very damp fuel.  The efficiency of the unit is very high, as evidenced by the temperature at which the exhaust exits the stack.  Despite the high temperature of combustion the exhaust enters the atmosphere at roughly 50 degrees Fahrenheit.  This indicates the large amount of energy recovered to supply heat to the surrounding area.  The facility cost roughly one hundred and twenty million dollars to complete.  It will be a great benefit to the community for many years to come by providing stable energy prices due to a large local fuel supply.

Zampell Enters the Danish Marketplace and Acquires Refcon A/S and Schmidt & Danielsen A/S

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – NOVEMBER 4, 2013 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES –  As of September 30, 2013 and October 28, 2013, respectively, Zampell  has acquired both Refcon A/S and Schmidt & Danielsen A/S!

Refcon is located in the city of Nastved in the eastern part of Denmark and Schmidt & Danielsen has locations in Videbaek and Sønder Omme in the western part of Denmark.  The combination of Refcon and Schmidt Danielsen will help to solidify both companies in the Danish marketplace and help each company to build on each other’s strengths to grow in their regions.  It will help to expand the joint capabilities of the companies by increasing resources to ensure ongoing competitive service throughout the country.

Through the acquisition process, in order to protect confidentiality, there were no discussions between the parties on the future steps to join the businesses together.  In order to ensure a smooth transition, both companies will be conducting business as usual for the balance of 2013.  At the beginning of 2014, Zampell, Refcon, and Schmidt & Danielsen will begin the process of joining together with a goal to complete this by the end of 2014.

The ultimate service concept will include two Zampell service operations: one in the eastern part of Denmark and one in the west.  The Schmidt & Danielsen staff will be primarily focused on Jutland, and the Refcon staff will be primarily focused on the islands of Funen and Zealand.  Both companies bring a new relationship with B&W/Vølund to Zampell and an impressive background in a wide variety of Energy from Waste projects including the recent Martin GmbH project in Roskilde and the new B&W/Vølund project at County Meath in Ireland.

Zampell is very excited to continue its growth internationally and develop new business opportunities with Schmidt & Danielsen and Refcon.  As a company that believes in the true spirit of being a family business, Zampell is pleased to welcome all of these new employees to the family and looks forward to delivering the same, consistent service experience to its new customers in Denmark for many years to come.

Zampell Acquires Performance Specialty Services of Orangfield, Texas

BEAUMONT, TX, USA – AUGUST 30, 2013 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES On August 30, 2013, Zampell acquired Performance Specialty Services (PSS) of Orangefield, Texas.  PSS has been a trusted vendor of Zampell for the past several years, providing scaffold and insulation support to Zampell’s Texas branch in Beaumont.  Zampell wanted to have PSS as part of the team given their dedication to safety, craftsmanship, and customer service.

With this acquisition, Zampell is also welcoming Mark Stone to the company along with his office staff and craftsmen.  Mark and his team have been in the scaffolding business for many years in a variety of commercial and industrial applications.  Mark brings a new, unique perspective on different approaches to providing scaffolding both inside and outside a variety of vessels, tanks, furnaces, boilers, and beyond.

This acquisition strengthens Zampell for several reasons.  First, it diversifies and solidifies Zampell’s position in the Gulf Coast marketplace by expanding its service offerings and customer base.  Second, it expands upon Zampell’s knowledge and experience base by adding key project management and supervisory capabilities in scaffolding and insulation.  Third, it brings aboard an expanded base of craftsmen, increasing Zampell’s overall capabilities and adding to the Zampell family of employees.

Brian Zampell Receives API 936 Certification

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – AUGUST 9, 2013 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – As part of Zampell’s growth into the petrochemical marketplace and Zampell’s increased focus on opportunities in the Gulf Coast, Brian Zampell recently received his API 936 Refractory Personnel Certification from the American Petroleum Institute (API).

The API 936 program is focused primarily on quality assurance for refractory applications in the field by providing a systematic approach to both field and laboratory inspection and testing of refractory materials. The program also provides a third party certification for individuals who intend to provide refractory inspection services.

While most contracts in the petrochemical marketplace require an independent and unbiased third party inspector on projects, Zampell believes that by having this certification it will ensure unity between its quality procedures on every job with the expectations of its customers.

Brian Zampell was quoted as saying, “I believe this certification is another tool in the toolbox for Zampell. It unifies our procedures with the third party inspectors and the customer. The API 936 helps Zampell stand out above competition by showing our technical dedication to quality and the petrochemical market.”

In order to continue the communication of the standards as defined by the API 936, Zampell will continue to send technical personnel from within its organization to also achieve this certification. Zampell believes that this will help to continue its growth in petrochemical work and also facilitate improved quality assurance practices overall. Zampell believes that collaborative learning from multiple industry resources in multiple markets increases the versatility and adaptability of its employees. This allows Zampell to sustain added value for its many customers.

Zampell Opens a West Coast Office in Portland, OR

PORTLAND, OR, USA – AUGUST 6, 2013 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – With the recent hiring of Richard Quintana as the Sr. Construction Manager, Zampell is proud to say it is providing refractory services from coast to coast in the United States. Richard has a significant amount of experience with many of the traditional Zampell industries served including power and heating boilers, recovery boilers, biomass boilers, wood dryers, landfill flares, thermal oxidizers, and especially furnaces and incinerators.

Rich’s background in furnaces, especially heat treating furnaces for the purpose of manufacturing aircraft engine parts, is consistent with the same origins of Zampell itself. Zampell’s founder, Thomas J. Zampell, built the reputation of Zampell on quality craftsmanship by originally focusing on the many furnaces utilized at GE in Lynn, MA. These furnaces had intricate components and brickwork for managing heat on a variety of parts utilized in aircraft engines and other critical components.

Rich also participated in one of the first tile installation projects in the United States in partnership with Carborundum at Stanislaus Resource Recovery Facility in Crows Landing, California. This is also consistent with the history of Zampell given the company’s long dedication to Waste-to-Energy dating back to 1975 in Saugus, Massachusetts.

Zampell is excited about the potential opportunities on the West Coast and continuing to diversify its geographic presence in the refractory industry.
