Zampell USA and New England Mechanical Overlay Sign Collaboration Agreement

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – February 12, 2019 – Zampell Refractories, Inc. and New England Mechanical Overlay (NEMO) inked a deal today to collaborate on future contracts that include full turnkey scopes. The Joint Collaboration Framework Agreement (JCFA) establishes business terms and a scope of collaboration to facilitate a streamlined process for servicing clients with this demand.

Bryan Foulds, CEO of NEMO, remarked, “I think this is a great fit for our two companies to collaborate on what we each do best. I believe that NEMO continues to be the standard in our market for safety, craftsmanship, and on-time delivery of mechanical and pressure-part work. Zampell has the same reputation for all of their services, so together we can provide the best value to our clients.”

Jim Zampell, Chairman of Zampell, commented, “Years ago, we had current employees of NEMO like Bryan Foulds and Steve Cotta working at Zampell in our refractories business. It’s great to have them be back in the family as a part of this new deal. It’s a good fit for us and for our clients.”

Both Zampell and NEMO currently work around each other all the time at a variety of manufacturing, pulp and paper, and waste-to-energy job sites. The crews already have a great working relationship and a good familiarity with each other, making this an easy fit operationally as Zampell and NEMO collaborate on projects. Above all else, both companies have their focus set on building a great culture for their employees that fosters a successful environment of safety, craftsmanship, and hard work. This consistent dedication to the people who work at Zampell and NEMO have made both companies successful and their partnership will help each other build mutual success.

“There is an increasing interest from clients to have a turnkey option for certain scenarios, so it’s something we had to consider as a business. Instead of trying to build something from the bottom, with all the challenges and risks of doing that, we decided the right move would be to partner with a company that has certainly earned our respect and ensures that we will be successful in providing the very best turnkey services, right out of the gate,” commented Brian Zampell.

Some of the benefits of the Zampell/NEMO JCFA, in addition to the expanded scopes of capabilities through both companies, is expanded access to a sales, safety, and project work force. It creates new opportunities for the sales staff at both companies, provides a greater network to the safety professionals, and allows for collaborative project management across both companies for better scheduled and streamlined projects.

“The core of the agreement is based on a strong foundation of communication where sharing information will lead to the best solution for clients that need a unified industrial solution for their facilities,” said Jamie Byrd, President of NEMO.

Zampell is a family business that is chiefly involved with the engineering and construction of refractories, insulation, and scaffolding within the industrial and commercial sectors, and facilities management in all sectors. Sean Case promoted to COO and honored with Tom Zampell award

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – DECEMBER 21, 2018 – Zampell Refractories, Inc. promoted Sean Case to Chief Operating Officer of all USA operations, effective October 1, 2018.  As a part of this, the Zampell Family chose to honor him on December 21, 2018 with a special Tom Zampell Award for Craftsmanship.

Sean Case marked 25 years with Zampell Refractories this year, starting with the company right out of Clemson University.  Through his time at the company, he often reflects that he has had just about every job at the company, from laborer right up to Chief Operating Officer (COO).  He first took over the management of the Massachusetts Division in 1996 as a young engineer with the business.  Massachusetts has long been a division that held a special place in everyone’s heart in the company given that it was the first division, dating back to Tom Zampell.  After growing this operation, Sean would later take over all of New England, the West Coast, and Florida before taking over all operations as COO.

In each Zampell division, an annual, year-end lunch is held to talk about the year, say thank you to everyone, recognize employees for years of service, and give the Tom Zampell Award for Craftsmanship.  The event today was for all the New England employees, and had over a hundred employees and office staff in attendance.

The Tom Zampell Award for Craftsmanship is designed to recognize employees who, each year, represent themselves in such a way that is a tribute to the legacy of Tom Zampell.  Given Tom Zampell’s dedication to the employees, it is typically given to a field employee in each division.  For special occasions, the Zampell Family chooses to honor certain individuals for demonstrating the values of Tom Zampell in how they lead the company.

When speaking of the purpose of the award, Brian Zampell remarked, “Tom Zampell dedicated to doing things the right way.  He had a simple philosophy in business, and that was if you take care of the people, the people take care of the customers, and the customers take care of the company.”

When speaking specifically about Sean’s recognition, Brian went on to say, “In life, we often encounter people who lead, unfortunately, in order to fulfill a personal ambition.  True leaders awaken idealism in people to achieve something greater than themselves.  To be a part of something special.  I believe that Tom Zampell had this quality.  Jim Zampell has this quality.  Ray Flynn, who many of you knew, had this quality.  Sean Case, our Chief Operating Officer, has this quality.  It is my honor to present Sean with the Tom Zampell Award.”

Sean is already fully immersed in the role of COO and is primarily focused on teaching each operation the systems which have made his other divisions successful.  These systems are directly related to how an operation organizes jobs, conducts safety on job sites and in training, and approaches sales and scheduling.  By having a core, teachable system, the ultimate goal is to have all divisions operating the same way so that no matter where employees may travel to assist in jobs, they ultimately will feel completely unified as one company throughout Zampell.

In regards to these systems and processes, Sean commented, “By having one way of doing things, this gives us the opportunity to make improvements as a company and have these improvements quickly help Zampell across the board.  If everyone is doing things the same way, it establishes a baseline for performance, then allows us to measure and improve from there.”

Zampell completes refractory installation of new steel reheat furnace

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – APRIL 25, 2018 – Zampell Refractories, Inc. successfully completed the refractory installation on a new steel reheat furnace this week in Roanoke, Virginia, USA. This project is a particularly notable milestone in Zampell history since it is the first complete construction of a new steel pusher furnace versus previous maintenance or rebuild projects on existing furnaces. The project involved more than 35,000 manhours, and Zampell is proud that it completed the project with zero incidents and zero injuries.

“I’m really proud of our crews to get in there and knock this out with great craftsmanship and an excellent safety performance on a complex job site,” said Brian Zampell, President. “New construction always presents a variety of unique hazards, so it was great to see everyone rise to the challenge.”

A pusher furnace has unique demands on the installation team due to the refractory design of the water-cooled rails that lead to the hearth where the steel exits the furnace and is rolled into product. The hearth needs to be perfectly plumb to ensure optimal operation of the furnace and production of the material without damaging the furnace in the process. Given these requirements, it is essential for the refractory installer to not only have competent, diligent craftspeople, but also have a strong technical engineering team in support of the installation crew. Zampell prides itself on having an engineering foundation supporting its projects, which is core to its history of success and values as a company.

“At Zampell, we strive to always provide a quality installation for our clients,” said John Heffernan, Vice President of Sales and Engineering. “As a part of that quality process, we deploy site engineers to support our craftspeople to ensure that the performance demands and tolerances that our clients require are met.”

By having this engineering-based approach, Zampell consistently grows its business and gains new clients by providing solutions that set the company apart from its competition.

With its continuous reinvestment in equipment, engineering staff, and craftspeople, Zampell is proud that projects like this can be successfully sold and completed as a result of their efforts. With this culture of continuous reinvestment, Zampell continues its success in the metallurgical industries, building its new refractories growth on steel furnaces, secondary aluminum melters and holders, heat treat furnaces, forge furnaces, investment casters, and bright annealing furnace work.

Jim Zampell remarked, “This project is another example of how metals will be a big part of the future in our refractories business. It’s great to see everyone’s commitment and teamwork pay off.”

Zampell acquires Cobb Lloyd Refractories Limited

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – DECEMBER 20, 2017 – Zampell Holdings, LLC completed the successful acquisition of Cobb Lloyd Refractories Limited of Burntwood, Staffordshire, United Kingdom, on December 20, 2017. This acquisition is a key step forward in furthering Zampell’s commitment to building its service capabilities in the United Kingdom with Cobb Lloyd’s focus on Energy from Waste, Biomass, and Incineration.

“Our dedication to Energy from Waste makes Cobb Lloyd a perfect fit for our growth plans in the UK,” said Brian Zampell, president of Zampell. “More importantly, I feel like Cobb Lloyd has the right cultural fit to be a success within Zampell.”

As part of this acquisition, Cobb Lloyd will merge with Zampell Limited, a UK Zampell affiliate that provides installation and engineering services in the refractories industry, giving the overall business greater resources to better service the marketplace. The brand will eventually be merged into one, with the operations coming together under the Zampell name.

“The acquisition will allow Cobb Lloyd and Zampell to share the wealth of experience and knowledge across the industries in which we work, in particular the Waste to Energy, Biomass and Incineration sectors,” said Graeme Corbet, Managing Director of Cobb Lloyd.

Along with Vulcan Refractories, another Zampell affiliate, the group will also be better positioned to service the Energy from Waste market since it can control the production ,supply and installation of quality refractory tiles for boiler linings. With Vulcan’s new, patented “ZEROX” formula for tiles, Zampell and Cobb Lloyd together will have the best product at the best value available to the marketplace.

“This is a really exciting time for Zampell and Vulcan in Europe,” said Gary Dukes, the managing director for all of Zampell’s operations in Europe. “We are confident that with Graeme and his team, coupled with our great employees and products in Denmark and England, we have the best capability in the market for maintaining our customers’ facilities. Through our process of continuous improvement, we will strive to be even better.”

Cobb Lloyd is a family business run by the Corbet family and based in Burntwood, Staffordshire, outside of Birmingham. The Corbet family can trace its history in the masonry and refractories trade back almost two hundred years. One of their ancestors in a previous business famously built the brick chimney for the chemical works at St. Rollox, Glasgow, that stood a little over 435 feet, or 132 meters. Graeme Corbet and his son, Calum, are currently active in the business and will continue managing the operation going forward as a part of Zampell.

Brian Zampell and Graeme Corbet first met in November 2009 and maintained contact over the years since Cobb Lloyd is a customer of Vulcan Refractories. Zampell and Cobb Lloyd found ways to help each other out with different projects and materials over the years. Graeme also made a visit to Zampell’s corporate offices in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in October 2014 while on holiday in New England, giving him a chance to meet Jim Zampell, Zampell’s chairman, and some other members of the management team who were on site that day. This ongoing relationship eventually culminated in this exciting new acquisition for Zampell and Cobb Lloyd.

“We have always felt that Graeme and his team would be a great fit for Zampell,” Brian Zampell said. “They have a rich family history in the business, similar to us, and we always felt a natural camaraderie with Graeme whenever we bumped into each other in the marketplace.”

ZAMPELL RELEASES ONLINE VERSION OF ITS 50 YEAR HISTORY

NEWBURYPORT, MA – MARCH 31, 2017 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – In 2016, Zampell turned 50 years old. As part of marking this occasion, Zampell engaged with David O’Neil from The Story Trust to compile a history of the company’s first 50 years. The history project culminated in the creation of a book, now available online at https://www.zampell.com/our-company-history/. A print format will be available soon as it is currently in production.

When asked about the book, Jim Zampell said, “I’m very proud to see this project completed. It’s a great opportunity for all of our current and future employees to know the story and see where we started.” He went on to comment, “My father would be humbled to see the company’s story like this. David [O’Neil] did a great job bringing it to life.”

The book project took over a year of interviews, historical analyses, and compiling artifacts from the company’s history to include in the book. Zampell included stories and recollections from customers, employees, vendors and members of the Zampell family. It has six different chapters, covering the history of Zampell from Tom Zampell’s early years, to the founding of Zampell Refractories, Inc. in 1966, up to the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary. The final chapter is a reflection by Jim Zampell on his career as President and CEO from 1981 to 2016 along with his thoughts on the future of the company under the leadership of his son, Brian.

In the foreward, Brian Zampell wrote, “My hope is that as we go forward, this book will serve as a reminder of who we are as a company today and the importance of staying true to our core values. It is a book that is especially created for the employees of Zampell, as this story is not just a story about a family but also a story about a family of employees. To our many employees, I want you to know that this is your story, and I sincerely thank you for your contributions.”

ZAMPELL ACQUIRES WESTERN INDUSTRIAL CERAMICS, INC.; SEAN CASE NAMED DIVISIONAL VICE PRESIDENT

NEWBURYPORT, MA, USA – NOVEMBER 17, 2016 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – The year 2016 is an exciting year for Zampell, highlighted by new growth, expansion, and leadership.  On November 17, a team from Zampell and members of the Huston family passed papers and closed the acquisition of Western Industrial Ceramics, Inc. (WIC) by Zampell Refractories, Inc.  As part of this new expansion, Sean Case was elevated to the title of Divisional Vice President, responsible for all of New England and the West Coast.

“Today’s an exciting day for Zampell,” said Brian Zampell, CEO.  “It’s an honor to elevate Sean to the title of Vice President in recognition of all of his contributions to Zampell over the years and tremendous leadership in making us who we are today.  This acquisition of WIC helps Zampell to augment its offerings and increase its West Coast presence.  Sean and our whole Zampell team did a great job putting it together.”

Western Industrial Ceramics, Inc., or “WIC” as it’s commonly known, is a provider of a variety of specialty refractories throughout the West Coast and beyond.  Half of the business is focused on the manufacturing, fabrication, and distribution of specialty parts made from primarily refractory ceramic fibers.  These parts are used in energy, investment casting, foundry, manufacturing, heat treating, and other high temperature industrial applications.  The other half of the business is focused on furnace construction and repair with a mix of refractory ceramic fiber, castable refractories, and brick.  They have a dedicated customer and employee base that Jim Huston and his team cultivated over many years.  Since Jim’s passing in 2013, the company continued with support from his wife and daughters until its sale to Zampell.

Sean commented on the acquisition, “It’s great to close this deal and move forward with the great people from WIC as part of our team here at Zampell.  They have some innovative, fabricated products and a good service team that we can take and build.  The acquisition itself was a team effort all around; everyone in the senior leadership team here at Zampell and WIC jumped through a lot of hoops to make this a successful deal.”

Zampell plans to make several changes as part of the WIC acquisition in order to position the company for future success for many years to come.  These changes will give WIC better access to the overall capabilities of Zampell and enhance their service offerings with increased technical infrastructure.  The company will be segmented into two core operations.  First, the product distribution, fabrication, and manufacturing operations will fall under the existing entity, ZAR-Tech, Inc., but continue to operate as “Western Industrial Ceramics” given their strong brand on the West Coast.  Joe Flynn, Operations Manager at ZAR-TECH, will be in charge of managing and positioning WIC to continue for many years to come.  The engineering and installation business will be merged into Zampell Refractories, Inc., giving it heightened technical and operational infrastructure that will enable it to tackle larger projects and capture new efficiencies.

“Overall, it’s a great day for both companies as it marks a new beginning for the employees of Western Industrial Ceramics.  This acquisition means that our customers can enjoy great service and enhanced value for many years to come,” said Brian Zampell.

ZAMPELL TURNS 50! BRIAN ZAMPELL NAMED AS NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO

BOSTON, MA, USA – JULY 21, 2016 – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – At an event marking the 50th anniversary of Zampell, Brian Zampell was named the new president and CEO of Zampell by his father, Jim Zampell, current president and CEO of the company. As part of the transition, Jim Zampell will be assuming the role of Chairman of the Board, focusing on the strategic direction of Zampell.

“Today’s a big day for Brian,” Jim told a group of managers, salespeople, supervisors, and other key leaders of Zampell at the Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor on Thursday. “Effective immediately, Brian is the new President.”

This announcement marks the beginning of the third generation of Zampell leadership, and it came at an event focused on thanking Zampell’s many employees for their contributions to the company over the last 50 years, as well as highlighting the values that have made the company a success.

Many of the speakers referred to the continuation of values that include craftsmanship, safety, hard work, persistence, customer service, and family.  These same values contributed to the past success of Zampell and will ensure its success for many years to come.

The highlight of the event was a harbor cruise with all those in attendance, plus members of the Zampell family and key advisors to the family business.  The beautiful weather and sea air made for a great event and the party continued late into the evening on the patio of the hotel.  The night before, a welcome reception was held at the hotel where the main attraction was a reproduction of the original 1966 Chevrolet Zampell truck.

Tom Zampell, Jim Zampell’s father, founded Zampell in 1966 at the age of 49 after a 30-year career with General Electric.  In 1976, Jim Zampell joined the company full time and was elevated to President in 1981, giving him a 40-year career with the company, 35 of which were spent as the President and CEO.  Brian Zampell joined the company full time in 2006, after completing a degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s in Business Administration.  In his closing address, Jim Zampell spoke about the importance of family and his vision for the company and its future.  His remarks focused on taking care of one another and he mentioned how proud he was of his children, Kristin and Brian, along with his happiness in being a grandfather.

Before Jim’s announcement, Brian took a moment to personally thank his father and the employees for their contributions to the company. Brian closed his comments by saying, “When I travel, and my father can’t make it for whatever reason, I always ask him, ‘Is there anything you want me to say to the employees?’ He always says, ‘Tell them thank you.’” He then told the crowd: “If there is one thing that you remember from this event, please remember, thank you, for your hard work, your dedication, and for being part of our family.” Brian went on to say, “There is one more person to thank…my father, Jim Zampell.”  At that point, the employees overwhelmingly stood up and applauded with a full standing ovation for all the support and accomplishments of Jim Zampell over his career.

Brian also included a special recognition for his mother, Christine Zampell, who has been instrumental in the success of the company through the many roles she has served, particularly with new ventures and the company real estate, and her support of Jim in his leadership.
